Electronic Arts lays off between 300 and 400 people… all while cancelling several projects

It’s another grim week for the video game industry. American giant Electronic Arts has announced a vast layoff plan.
Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reports that between 300 and 400 people will be leaving the company, including around a hundred from Respawn Entertainment (Star Wars Jedi, Apex Legends…). The same studio is also affected by the cancellation of two games.
One of these titles was an extraction-based shooter set in the Titanfall universe, codenamed “R7”. However, its development was far from complete. Nothing is known at present about the second cancelled title. Respawn now wishes to focus on Apex Legends and the Star Wars license. The imminent release of a Titanfall 3 now seems highly unlikely.
Justin Higgs, a spokesman for Electronic Arts, has issued the following statement.
"As part of our focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we have made some changes within our organization to more effectively align teams and allocate resources for future growth."
So far this year, there have been over 2,000 redundancies in the video game industry across some sixty companies.
