A driver has been seriously injured in a 12-car collision believed to have been caused by black ice on a major freeway.
A male driver was airlifted to hospital from the crash on the Western Fwy in Gordon, near Ballarat in Victoria, about 6.10am on Thursday.

The freeway was closed near Chapmans Rd for several hours but has now reopened.
Drivers have been warned to take care in the area, with cold and wet weather conditions increasing the likelihood of dangerous black ice forming on roads.
Black ice, also known as clear ice, is when ice forms on a solid surface such as a road but, being transparent, becomes invisible to drivers who are then at risk of losing traction or control of their vehicles on the slippery surface.
“Wet and cold weather can reduce visibility and cause roads to be more slippery,” VicRoads said.
“Some roads in alpine areas may be affected by snow, ice or fog and drivers should carry chains and fit them if required.”
