Drew Barrymore digs through dirt to win audience member a vacation

Drew Barrymore isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty if it means that one of her talk show’s audience members gets to go home with a luxury vacation. 

During Thursday’s episode, the actress and TV host upended an entire container of dirt onto the floor of her kitchen set and furiously dug around for a missing mushroom so that she could award a woman named Sabrina with a five-night trip to Half Moon Bay, Calif. 

Prior to her digging, Sabrina, who was dressed in a white lab coat, had the rules for the game explained to her by Drew Crew member, Valerie Bertinelli. 

“Sabrina we have a tank filled with Earth and we’ve hidden 10 mushrooms inside,” she explained. “So if you go foraging and you find three — just three! — in 15 seconds, you’re going to win a huge prize.”

Sabrina had no trouble finding the first two mushrooms, but suddenly stalled when attempting to locate the third. When the lock ran out, her fellow audience members let out a sad groan as a stunned Barrymore shouted, “Wait, what?!”

The host then ran over to Sabrina and flipped the container over without a moment’s hesitation, spilling dirt on the table and across the floor. As Bertinelli hid her giggles behind her hand, Barrymore exclaimed, “It’s a never-ending dirt pile!” 

Sabrina then attempted to explain that there weren’t anymore mushrooms in the jar, prompting Barrymore to squat down in her heels and begin sifting through the soil to find the necessary fungi. 

“Sabrina, we’re not gonna go down like that!” Barrymore maintained. “This is crazy! WHERE’S THOSE SHROOMS!” 

Barrymore eventually found a mush, mush smaller mushroom on the floor. “Oh, you are kidding me,” she snapped, holding the little fungi up for the camera to see. “They’re pieces of mushroom!” 

Bertinelli then exclaimed that Sabrina had won the game and would be getting a trip to Half Moon Bay and a free lunch at chef Scott Clark’s restaurant, Dad’s Luncheonette.

The audience member began dancing before pulling Barrymore into a hug. “Thank you so much!” She cheered. “Thank you.” 

After all her furious foraging, Barrymore joked that she felt “lightheaded” as she made her way back to the kitchen where Bertinelli and chef Scott Clark were waiting for her to enjoy a mushroom sandwich. 

And it’s safe to say she worked up quite an appetite. “I’ve got dirty, earthy hands and I’m ready to motorboat a dirty, earthy sandwich,” Barrymore exclaimed as Bertinelli once again burst into laughter. Clark added, “Yes, get in there!”
