Dr. Mehmet Oz’s swearing-in ceremony at the White House didn’t go as planned.
Members of the press were abruptly rushed out of the Oval Office on Friday after Oz’s 11-year-old granddaughter, Philomena, fainted in the middle of Donald Trump’s remarks following the instatement of the former TV doctor, who was tapped to serve as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service.
In video footage from the event, Trump can be heard speaking to the press about nuclear weapons when a bystander interjects, “Philo fainted, Philo fainted.” The announcement prompted Oz too move from behind the president to attend to his granddaughter, who could not be seen on camera until she began to recover.
“Press out, everybody out!” a White House official says in the video. “Thank you, press. Get out right now.”
Others at the event can be heard saying, “She’s okay, she’s okay.”
A White House representative told PEOPLE in a statement, “A minor family member fainted during Dr. Oz’s swearing in ceremony in the Oval Office. We are happy to say she is okay.”
Trump remained behind the podium as he watched the scene unfold with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., standing by his side. Eventually, the president approached Oz’s family as Philomena was ushered away.

Oz first came into the pop cultural spotlight when he appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show alongside host Oprah Winfrey dozens of times in the 2000s. He later hosted his own daytime talk show, The Dr. Oz Show, which began in 2009 and ran for 13 seasons. The show ended in 2022 as Oz mounted a campaign for a Senate seat in Pennsylvania. Although he successfully earned the Republican Party’s nomination in the race, he was ultimately defeated by Democrat John Fetterman in the general election.
