In a movie centered around frat bros, it’s no surprise that the roughhousing in Neighbors went a little too far.
On the most recent episode of Call Her Daddy, host Alex Cooper asked Dave Franco how Zac Efron broke his hand while shooting Neighbors. The Together actor described how Efron injured himself during a fight scene.
“I’m trying to remember if I was wearing a cup and he came in just really strong,” Franco said. “I think it was a dislocated thumb to be fair, but it happened.”
Neighbors follows the standoff between young couple Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) and the fraternity house next door. The frat’s leaders Teddy (Efron) and Pete (Franco) are determined to throw a legendary end-of-year party.
In one scene, Teddy and Pete have a fight after the latter sleeps with the former’s girlfriend. The two grab onto each other’s crotches in an attempt to get the other person to relent. This is when Efron hurt his hand.
“I just think he came in with enough force from the wrong angle,” Franco recalled.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2014, Efron said the cast did all of their own stunts in Neighbors. The Iron Claw star also addressed injuring himself during the movie.
“Those Franco brothers just have balls of steel,” he joked. “But I did legitimately break my hand.”
