*Slick Rick, hip-hop’s unparalleled storyteller, has released “Victory,” a groundbreaking visual album that cements his legacy while pushing artistic boundaries.
Released through Idris Elba’s 7Wallace label and Mass Appeal, the project, executive produced by Rick (The Poet) and Elba (The Visionary), marks Rick’s first album in 26 years, the press release states. Described as a “sonic and cinematic tour de force,” Victory blends lyrical mastery with striking visuals, featuring collaborations with Nas, Giggs, and Estelle. Watch the trailer above.
“Once you figure out how to stay above the bar, then you can fly. So in my eyes and spirit, Victory the visual album represents intelligence, versatility, creativity, storytelling, exploring wordplay, Black excellence,” Slick Rick says. “Victory symbolises success, triumph and winning against all odds, with class and grace!”
Crafted over four years in London and France, with visuals shot across the U.S., UK, and Africa, the album pays homage to Rick’s roots while showcasing genre-defying artistry.
At its core, “Victory” includes a 30-minute immersive film directed by Meji Alabi, known for Beyoncé’s “Black Is King.” The film, premiering today, June 13, at the Tribeca Festival’s SVA 1 Theater, brings Rick’s narratives to life with bold imagery.
The project’s aesthetic, shaped by photographer Jonathan Mannion and Equator Studios, is complemented by Young Guru’s mixing and artwork from British agency PAQ and Rick’s Team Eye Patch. The film will premiere on YouTube on June 17.
