Controversial Baby Names That Are Banned Across Countries

*Choosing a name for a newborn is one of the most exciting parts of becoming a parent. However, some names have sparked such controversy that they’ve been banned in various countries due to cultural, social, or legal reasons. While some names may seem harmless, others have been deemed inappropriate for various reasons.
According to The Daily Mail, in Saudi Arabia, the name Linda, though common in the UK, is considered “non-Islamic” and culturally inappropriate. It was officially banned in 2014 for not aligning with local traditions. Meanwhile, in France, the name Fraise—meaning “strawberry”—was prohibited due to its crude connotations. The phrase “ramène ta fraise” translates to “get your butt over here,” which made authorities uncomfortable with the name’s potential implications.
Similarly, in Sweden, a couple’s attempt to name their daughter Metallica was rejected in 2007, primarily due to trademark concerns. The Swedish government ruled that the name could lead to confusion, as it was already associated with a famous metal band. However, Swedish parents are free to choose names inspired by other bands like Mayhem or Opeth, which are acceptable.
Some names are banned for their absurdity or to avoid potential embarrassment. In New Zealand, authorities stepped in to change a girl’s name from Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii to something more conventional after the child refused to reveal it to her friends. In Malaysia, fruit names like Apple and Papaya are not allowed, as they might invite teasing.
In the UK, Rogue was deemed unacceptable as it suggests unlawful or dangerous behavior. Meanwhile, in Australia, names like LOL and Spinach were rejected due to their potential for ridicule. And in the US, the name @ has been banned because it’s not deemed suitable for a person’s identity.
From celebrity-inspired choices to names that challenge cultural norms, it’s clear that baby names are taken seriously around the world. Parents may want to think twice about how their names could be perceived across different cultures and legal systems.
