Civil Rights Leaders and Members of Congress Rally Nationwide Opposition to ‘Big Ugly Bill’ in New Orleans

*In a defining moment for the ongoing fight for economic justice, national civil rights leaders and key members of the Congressional Black Caucus gathered in New Orleans on Saturday, July 5, to sound the alarm over the newly passed federal tax legislation now widely referred to as the “Big Ugly Bill.”
Speaking at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, the group delivered a unified warning about the bill’s sweeping impact on working families across the country and called on Americans from every region to take a stand.
The legislation, pushed forward under the current administration, has been criticized for slashing essential services like healthcare and food assistance while delivering enormous tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. Its passage represents what many describe as one of the most regressive economic policies in modern U.S. history.
Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, opened the briefing with a pointed statement:
“This bill is not just harmful, it is devastating. It represents the largest transfer of wealth from working Americans to billionaires in the history of this country. Its reach will be felt from New Orleans to New York, from rural towns to major cities. It is not just Louisiana’s problem — it is a national crisis.”

Reverend Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the National Action Network, echoed that urgency.
“This is not simply bad policy, it is a moral outrage,” he said. “You cannot be a just society when you take from the poor and give to the rich. This bill is a slap in the face to every American who is struggling to make ends meet. We must organize, mobilize, and resist in every community across this nation.”
The media briefing brought together other leading voices including Melanie Campbell, President of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation; Damon Hewitt, President of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; Janai Nelson, President of the Legal Defense Fund; and Reverend Shavon Arline-Bradley, President of the National Council of Negro Women.
Also present were prominent members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Chairwoman Yvette Clarke, Representative Troy Carter of Louisiana, Representative Gregory Meeks, Representative Jahana Hayes, Representative Nikema Williams, and Representative LaMonica McIver. All spoke passionately about the national implications of the bill, warning that families in every state — regardless of political affiliation or geography — will be affected.
Representative Clarke issued a direct challenge to Americans everywhere: “Do not think this is only happening to someone else. If you care about your healthcare, your child’s education, or the cost of food on your table, this bill touches your life. The time to speak up is now.”
