The Summer I Turned Pretty stars Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno are truly brothers on and off screen — to the point where they delight in brutally pranking each other.
During Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show, Briney recalled the time when he and their fellow series costar Sean Kaufman gave Casalegno the fright of his life by stealing his car while he was in the middle of a fitting.
“We’ve had our fun and I think we’ve taken moments a little too far,” Briney admitted to host Jimmy Fallon. “There’s this moment in our second season where our friend Sean, who’s also in the show, he and I stole Gavin’s car.”

The 27-year-old explained that they all use rental cars to get around the nearby area while filming. “[Casalegno] was in a fitting. We went and took his keys and then we hid [the car]. And it’s a big lot,” he said. “We hid it and then he came out and we were like, ‘I don’t know where your car is, man!’”
Casalegno, who was seated alongside Briney during the late-night chat, explained that the “brutal” prank immediately sent him into a tizzy.
“I did everything in my power — I pretty much raised hell,” he confessed. “I was like, ‘I’m gonna get my car back.’… I was trying to meet up with my friends and surf, and then all of sudden my car’s gone. I’m just like, ‘What?’ And I immediately knew it was them.”
So, naturally, he got his own revenge on the pair of pranksters. Fallon then displayed a snapshot of Casalegno defiantly lying on top of Briney’s car so that his costar couldn’t leave the lot. “My thought process was, if I couldn’t go home, then Chris can’t go home,” Casalegno teased.
And, to show them just how devastating it was to be suddenly without a vehicle, Casalegno explained that he tried to guilt-trip his costars into giving him his keys back by running to a nearby gas station.
“I just was like, ‘You know what? If I can’t go home, I need food, and I don’t have my wallet because it’s in the car…’” he began. Briney deadpanned, “He was just guilt-tripping us. This was the bit. He was guilt-tripping us into giving him his keys back.”
Fallon then showcased a clip of Casalegno absolutely hoofing it on his gas station run, which was taken by Briney and Kaufman from their car.
“Why were you going that fast?” Fallon asked afterward, to which Casalegno replied: “I tried to beat them to the gas station!”
As for who will beat the other in the running for Belly’s (Lola Tung) heart? Well, fans will need to watch the third and final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty, which premieres today on Amazon Prime Video.
