*R. Kelly is intensifying his legal battle for release, accusing the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago of misconduct and demanding their disqualification from his case.
The disgraced R&B singer is serving a 30-year sentence at FCI Butner in North Carolina for 2022 convictions on child pornography and obstruction of justice charges. Kelly claims a fair trial was impossible due to prosecutorial conflicts of interest. In a recent court filing, his attorney, Beau Brindley, called for a federal judge to bar the Northern District of Illinois from further involvement, alleging “serious malfeasance” by at least one former prosecutor.
“While it is theoretically conceivable that one single AUSA went rogue and participated in all of this misconduct on her own, with neither the participation nor knowledge of any of her colleagues or supervisors in this prosecution, that possibility is both remote and in need of full and impartial investigation,” Brindley said, All Hip Hop reports.
He added, “Every single AUSA who worked on the investigation or prosecution of this case has a personal interest in the outcome of this investigation. Every supervisor who oversaw any part of the investigation or prosecution of this case has a personal stake in the results of Mr. Kelly’s motion.”
Kelly’s team alleges a conspiracy involving stolen legal mail, coerced testimony, and a plot to assassinate him in prison. “This is not coincidence,” Brindley wrote. “This is not an R. Kelly production. This is what they are doing to him as these words are being written.”
They claim a key witness, “Jane,” was pressured to alter her testimony, and an Aryan Brotherhood member, Mikeal Glenn Stine, was offered early release to kill Kelly but refused. Additional allegations include Kelly overdosing on drugs and being denied critical medical care.
Brindley noted that the Chicago office cannot investigate itself and suggests prosecutors from another district handle the case.
The court has yet to rule on these motions, leaving Kelly’s fate uncertain.
