Carrie Coon says Tracy Letts couldn’t do ‘White Lotus’ for this reason

Carrie Coon doesn’t think her husband, actor and playwright Tracy Letts, has what it takes to survive The White Lotus — at least, not in its current form.

The His Three Daughters actress, 44, revealed on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s The Julia Cunningham Show that Letts, 59, wouldn’t have been a good fit for the recently released third season of Mike White’s Emmy-winning comedy series just based solely on its hot, summertime setting.

“He was curious about whether there was a part for him, but here’s the thing about Tracy: he’s allergic to the sun and he hates the ocean. And so this was not the season for him,” Coon explained. “He needs to be in some cold weather season down the line. So I think it’s good that he wasn’t, you know, invited along.”

Despite not being a big fan of summer and all of its shenanigans, Coon, who married Letts in 2013, noted that she thought her husband would get a real kick out of working with White someday in the future.

“He’s been eager to work with Mike his whole career,” she said. “He’s known about Mike White before it was cool.”

The White Lotus is known for being set at the height of summer across several dreamy island locations, with the first season taking place in Hawaii and the second in Sicily. The latest installment, which premiered on HBO earlier this week, sees a new gaggle of tourists — played by Coon, Walton Goggins, Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey, and more — check into the fictional hotel chain’s lavish Thailand location.

Letts’ heliphobia may have actually helped him in the end, because season 3 of The White Lotus might have been the hottest one yet — and not in a fun way. Coon’s fellow cast members previously told TIME that it was gloriously and outrageously hot everyday on set, with Isaacs revealing that the temperatures were so high that it made the entire cast “stink” while filming intimate scenes.

“By the end of each day, we’re just caked in sweat and makeup. You can peel your clothes off with a trowel. It melts your fillings,” Isaacs said at the time. “It would be churlish to complain, there are terrible things going on in the world, but we’ve all had enough.”

Sam Nivola, who plays Isaac’s son in the series, noted that the experience filming season 3 was a far cry from the festivities of season 2. “From what I’ve heard, the second season was a lot more partying,” he said. “It’s honestly so hot here that it’s hard to drink or do anything like that that makes you feel dehydrated.”

The White Lotus is streaming now on Max. Listen to Coon discuss Letts potentially joining another season of the show in the clip above.
