Broadcast TV Continues Losing Streak Against Streaming in Viewership Battle

*Broadcast television’s battle with streaming to capture more viewers is not working in its favor. The downward spiral is noted in historic numbers, per the Hollywood Reporter, which reports that broadcasting’s dominant place for much of TV history has slipped.
The result is less than 20 percent of viewing being accounted for with over-the-air networks in June.
The finding marks a first since Nielsen began tracking TV use by platform in 2021. Specifically, the ratings services monthly Gauge rankings reveal broadcast at 18.5 percent viewership for June, down from 20.1 percent in May.
Overall, a 3 percent increase in TV use was recognized across all platforms, compared to a month earlier. A good bit of the surge stems from kids and teenagers as they enjoy their summer break from school.
People ages 6-17 spent 27 percent more time on TV screens in June than they did in May, the Reporter pointed out while highlighting stats for streaming. The platform accounted for two thirds of the viewing for that target group.

Accordingly, streaming set another monthly high with 46 percent of all use, streaming set another monthly high, beating the combined total for broadcast (18.5 percent) and cable (23.4 percent) for a second straight month, accordingly.
As for who benefited most, Netflix comes out on top. The streamers viewing numbers experienced a 13.5 percent month-to-month bump up, due to the strength of shows like “Ginny & Georgia.” The comedy drama, which stars Antonia Gentry and Brianne Howey, respectively in the title roles was June’s most streamed series with 9.9 billion minutes of viewing.
In addition to “Ginny & Georgia,” new Netflix entries “Blindspot” and “Animal Kingdom,” in addition to the final season of “Squid Game,” which premiered just before the end of Nielsen’s June reporting period (May 26-June 29) factored into the results
June’s findings fueled Netflix’s share of all TV use up to 8.3 percent in June, versus 7.5 percent in May.
Looking at other outlets, the Reporter mentioned Peacock experiencing 13.4 percent more viewing, caused by a new season of Love Island USA, which added 0.1 to its share of all TV use for the month.

For YouTube, viewership rose 0.3 to 12.8 percent of all viewing.
Traditional TV, by contrast to streaming, though down, can count the NBA as a positive, with the league’s playoff and finals series. The finals accounted for the top seven broadcast audiences of the month, resulting in a 12 percent bump in viewing for cable news.
