For Good’ bursts with new vocals, wedding gowns, flying monkeys

No good deed goes unpunished, but as far as we’re concerned, the Wicked: For Good trailer is all reward.

The highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s Wicked released its first trailer on Wednesday.

The film, which hits theaters on Nov. 21, continues the epic story of the witches of Oz, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). After Elphaba declared herself against the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) at the conclusion of the first film, the two former friends find themselves on opposing sides.

The first footage of the film debuted in March at CinemaCon, and this trailer appears to be much of what was shown then. It showcases the bond between Elphaba and Glinda, opening on Glinda greeting Elphaba outside her balcony and urging her to come inside before the flying monkeys spot her.

“There’s no going back,” Elphaba says, as she practices magic, using the Grimmerie as her guide. “This is between the Wizard and I.”

Further complicating matters is Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), Glinda’s handsome boyfriend (and soon-to-be husband if the shot of Glinda walking down the aisle in a wedding dress is any indication). Fiyero now appears to head the Wizard’s guard, charged with hunting down Elphaba. And when Elphaba presses him about whether or not he’s changed, he says he has, turning a gun on the Wizard.

We also get further glimpses of Dorothy and her friends on the yellow brick road, with Glinda warning Elphaba that they’re “coming for” her. There are glimpses of the hysteria surrounding Elphaba and her villainization, including Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) continuing to denounce her as a “wicked witch” and shots of villagers wielding pitchforks.

But above all, the trailer emphasizes the bond between the two witches. “You’re the only friend I ever had,” Elphaba tells Glinda, tears in her eyes, as she embraces her. “The only one that mattered,” Glinda replies.

New vocals for both witches underscore the trailer, beginning with Erivo’s rendition of Elphaba’s power ballad, “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished,” and ending with both Erivo and Grande’s take on the moving duet, “For Good.”

The film promises tears for more than just Glinda, considering that director Jon M. Chu warned us last fall that it would be a bit heavier than its predecessor. “If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences,” he said“Choices are difficult to make, but when you do make those choices, sometimes the result isn’t what you expect it to be. It can be lonely, it can be hard.”

He added, “There’s a lot of soul searching in movie 2. They’re asking, ‘Is this the right decision that you made?'”
