Bobby Brown Wants to Hear Samples Before Approving Them

*During a recent interview on Club Shay Shay with Shannon Sharpe, Bobby Brown talked about how he handles requests to sample or cover his music. He made it clear that he always wants to hear the final version before giving permission.

“Yes, I gotta hear it,” he said without hesitation. “Because you don’t know what these kids will say these days. These kids will say some sh– that you don’t want your song associated with.”

Brown explained that he’s cautious about how his music is used. He doesn’t want his songs tied to lyrics or messages he disagrees with.

Brown Says Most Samples Don’t Do His Songs Justice

Sharpe then asked if Brown had ever liked a sampled version of one of his tracks. The R&B legend couldn’t think of a single example.

“I don’t think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs,” he admitted.

He went even further, calling out one famous remake in particular—Britney Spears’ 2004 cover of his hit “My Prerogative.”

Britney Spears’ Version Was a “Butchering,” Says Brown

Brown didn’t hold back when discussing Spears’ take on his 1988 classic.

“Britney Spears butchered ‘Prerogative,’” he told Sharpe. “Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that I couldn’t take it. I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears and I was thinking… Teddy Riley is doing it too, so you know, but I felt it was a butchering.”

Interestingly, Brown was mistaken about the production. Spears’ version was actually handled by Swedish duo Bloodshy & Avant—not Teddy Riley, who produced the original.

Bobby Brown Weighs In on Chris Brown vs. Usher Debate

The conversation shifted to another hot topic—the ongoing debate over who is the better entertainer: Usher or Chris Brown. Fans often compare both artists to the late Michael Jackson.

Brown, a legendary performer himself, didn’t hesitate to pick a side.

“I would go with Chris Brown,” he said. “Chris Brown is a dancer, singer, and great entertainer. He goes out there and he does the ultimate stuff on stage and you just have to love it.”

Still, he made sure to acknowledge Usher’s talent.

“Usher’s also a great entertainer, but I’ve got to go with Chris on being as close to Michael as anybody could ever get,” he told Sharpe.
