‘Snow White’ producer’s son blames Rachel Zegler for box office flop

  • Screenshots show Snow White producer Marc Platt’s son Jonah Platt criticizing Rachel Zegler.
  • Jonah said Zegler “clearly hurt the film’s box office.”
  • Snow White underperformed at the box office, making $42 million over its first weekend.

Snow White producer Marc Platt’s son and actor Ben Platt’s brother, Jonah Platt, is seeing red after the Disney film underperformed at the box office across its opening weekend.

In a since-deleted comment on an Instagram post for his Being Jewish podcast, per The Wrap, Jonah replied to a social media user who took issue with a Variety report alleging that Marc “flew to New York to speak directly with” Zegler in response to backlash over the star expressing pro-Palestinian views online shortly after the film’s trailer debuted.

“You really want to do this? Yeah, my dad, the producer of enormous piece of Disney IP with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, had to leave his family to fly across the country to reprimand his 20 year old employee for dragging her personal politics into the middle of promoting the movie for which she signed a multi-million dollar contract to get paid and do publicity for,” Jonah allegedly wrote in the comment, according to at least two different screen grabs circulating online.

Jonah continued, noting that “this is called adult responsibility and accountability,” and alleged that “her actions clearly hurt the film’s box office” after Snow White debuted to an underwhelming $42.2 million during its opening weekend, against a reported $250 million budget.

“Free speech does not mean you’re allowed to say whatever you want in your private employment without repercussions,” Jonah continued, claiming that “tens of thousands of people worked on that film,” and, in his estimation, Zegler “hijacked the conversation for her own immature desires at the risk of all the colleagues and crew and blue collar workers who depend on that movie to be successful. Narcissism is not something to be coddled or encouraged.”

Entertainment Weekly has not been able to independently verify Jonah’s remarks, and all comments have been turned off on the post where it reportedly appeared. However, Jonah did reply with three heart emojis to an X user who reposted a New York Post story about the deleted comment with the social copy: “‘Snow White’ producer’s son unloads on ‘immature’ Rachel Zegler for pro-Palestine comments: ‘Her actions hurt the film.'”

EW has reached out to representatives for Marc Platt, Jonah Platt, Rachel Zegler, and Disney for comment.

Zegler and Gal Gadot fronted the musical adaptation of the classic Disney animated movie as Snow White and the Evil Queen, respectively, with social media users harshly criticizing Gadot’s performance, while critics were split on the production.

Gadot also courted pushback for her views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which came to a head at her recent Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony that was disrupted by protestors who took issue with her pro-Israel stance.

Disney’s live-action Snow White adaptation further courted racist backlash when some took issue with the studio casting an actress of Latin descent to play a character who, in the original fairy tale story, is listed as having “skin as white as snow.”

Snow White is now playing in theaters.
