Blake Lively didn’t realize watching ‘The Bad Seed’ was making her sick

Movies have the power to move us in all sorts of ways — including making us sick to our stomachs.

Another Simple Favor stars Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick teamed up with writer-director Paul Feig to share their seven favorite murder mystery films with Entertainment Weekly — and Lively revealed that one particular film used to make her throw up.

“My mom loves old, scary movies,” Lively said. “So when I was little, she would play The Bad Seed. I thought I would get the stomach flu after because I would throw up, but I was just so psychologically disturbed.”

The 1956 film stars Patty McCormack as Rhoda Penmark, a seemingly perfect eight-year-old girl complete with blond pigtails. But Rhoda has a secret — she’s rotten to her core and she’ll stop at nothing, including murder, to get what she wants.

Lively stuck with the classics when picking her favorites (though she did clarify that The Bad Seed isn’t really a murder mystery in a traditional sense), also choosing 1944’s Laura, starring Gene Tierney as the titular mysterious character. Lively said that no matter how many times she watches it, she can never remember who did it, speaking to the film’s thrilling complexity.

Feig chose three films, including Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation and the more recent Bodies Bodies Bodies. He also selected Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Rear Window, though he noted that Another Simple Favor pays homage to another Hitchcock favorite, North by Northwest. When Kendrick’s Stephanie is left holding a knife after pulling it out of a murder victim, it perfectly mirrors a scenario in which Cary Grant’s Roger Thornhill is framed for murder in the same way.

Kendrick opted for two more European films, selecting Gosford Park and 8 Women.

Now, the trio has their own contender for a murder mystery movie list with Another Simple Favor, which once again finds Stephanie and Emily (Lively) embroiled in a mystery that involves an ever-mounting body count.
