Bowen Yang relates to his Fire Island character the most

Of all the characters he’s played, comedian Bowen Yang relates most to “sad sack” Howie from the queer rom-com Fire Island.

In a new segment with Entertainment Weekly, the star of The Wedding Banquet sits down with costars Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, and Han Gi-chan to answer a round of questions with an emotional, Charades-like twist: He and his costars must answer the questions tied to a specific mood, whether it’s anger, boredom, or goofiness, among other ranges of emotion.

When asked about which character he’s played that has been most like him with the emotion calling for boredom, a committed Yang wearily cites Howie and calls him a “sad sack,” which “was not a stretch” to play. He says in sheer boredom, “I was playing an Asian guy on Fire Island who wasn’t getting laid — that’s me in real life, baby.”

From writer and star Joel Kim Booster, the 2022 rom-com is a loose reimagining of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice and follows a group of queer besties as they summer in the Fire Island Pines. As Howie, Yang plays a young man who doesn’t have much experience in the relationship department. His pal Noah (Booster) tries to change that, and is intent on finding someone for Howie to hook up with during their weeklong stay.

Andrew Ahn, whom Yang reunited with for The Wedding Banquet, directed the feature. The filmmaker recently told EW that the Fire Island cast remains close — and that there have indeed been talks of a sequel. “There are things in the ether,” Ahn said. “Joel always jokes that it’s going to be like the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That, where it’s 30 years later and they’re older and gayer. We’ll see what happens.”

Elsewhere in EW’s “Range of Emotions” segment, Gladstone goofily reveals her celebrity crush on Cate Blanchett, Tran anxiously expresses a desire to play fictional Harry Potter character Hermione Granger, and Han adoringly picks Gladstone’s Killers of the Flower Moon costar Leonardo DiCaprio to play him in a biopic.
