“I was young in my first relationship, so I had no frame of reference. We were freshmen in college and at different schools. He didn’t like my friends and had asked me not to hang out with them. I didn’t think it was a serious request, so I continued to. The next weekend, he came to visit. I noticed a hickey on his neck (that issue is a whole other nest of hornets) and asked about it.”
“He asked me how it made me feel. I sat with it for a minute, then I said, not good, betrayed, etc…He said, ‘Good, remember that,’ because that’s how I made him feel when I didn’t do what he told me to do. I stopped hanging out with my friends. I had never encountered such behavior before, and he enveloped my life. It got much worse. I was blessed with a child and PTSD and the inability to trust men from that relationship. I have been single for 20 years.”
