Anna Wintour seeks new ‘Vogue’ editorial leader after 37 years

There are some changes happening at Vogue Magazine. After almost four decades as editor in chief of the “fashion bible,” Anna Wintour is making room for a new leader on the magazine’s hierarchy.

Wintour announced on Thursday that the Condé Nast publication is seeking a head of editorial content, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed.

Despite speculation that Wintour will be stepping away from the magazine, the 75-year-old will stay on as global editorial director at Vogue and Condé Nast’s global chief content officer, overseeing every brand globally, includingVanity Fair, GQ, AD and more, with the exception of The New Yorker.

The move will put American Vogue under the same structure that has rolled out across the publication’s international editions, with a head of editorial content reporting to Wintour as the global editorial director. It’s a decision made in response to how much Wintour’s role at the company has expanded in recent years; bringing on a new head of editorial content will allow her more time to support the markets more equally, in addition to leading all titles at Condé Nast.

Wintour began her reign at American Vogue in 1988, and has become as much as an icon as the magazine itself. Her longstanding reputation is still thought to have inspired the character of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, a book written by her former assistant Lauren Weisberger. The writer has published two sequels to the book: 2013’s Revenge Wears Prada, which sees Andy working as an editor at a bridal magazine as she crosses paths with Miranda once again, and 2018’s When Life Gives You Lululemons, which follows Emily’s career as a publicist in the Connecticut suburbs.

The story was later made into a bestselling film starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, with the latter playing the powerful Runway magazine leader oft speculated to be shaped in Wintour’s image.

Though Weisberger and Streep have repeatedly — including in EW’s 2021 oral history on the film — stressed that the actress’ ruthless character was not a direct caricature of Wintour, many in the fashion world interpreted the book as a scathing take on the esteemed figure.

Still, as Amy Odell reported in the biography about Wintour’s life and work titled, Anna: The Biography of the film’s premiere in 2006 — which Wintour attended while wearing Prada — “[Director David] Frankel sat behind Anna and [Wintour’s daughter] Bee. Anna had a seat at the end of the row and, though she had a habit of dashing out of plays that bored her, watched the whole movie. At one point, Bee turned to her and said, ‘Mom, they really got you.'”

The search for a new leader at Vogue comes as a sequel for the film is currently in development at Disney.

Last July, EW exclusively revealed that all major stars from the first film — including Hathaway, Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, plus director David Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman — are in talks to return and reprise their roles. A source close to the production told EW that original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is also working on the sequel’s screenplay.

The 2006 film was also adapted into a stage musical, which premiered in Chicago in 2022 and debuted on London’s West End on Sunday. Elton John wrote original music for the play, and Vanessa Williams is portraying Miranda in the London production.
