*Amber Ruffin responded to the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) canceling her appearance at their annual dinner.
Ruffin joined Seth Meyers on Late Night to share her trademark sarcasm and humor about the controversy, Too Fab reports. The comedian was removed from the lineup after comments she made on The Daily Beast podcast stirred backlash from the Trump administration. During the conversation, Ruffin dismissed the idea of balancing jokes between political parties, a request reportedly made by the WHCA. Instead, she referred to the Trump administration as “kind of a bunch of murderers” and argued against humanizing them, saying, “they shouldn’t get to feel that way, ‘cause they’re not.”
Ruffin was invited to perform at the dinner in February, but after the video interview resurfaced (see below), the WHCA decided to remove her from the lineup.
In a funny bit with Meyers, Ruffin poked fun at the need to be “fair” to both sides of the political spectrum. Sarcastically mimicking a newly acquired perspective, she said, “If there’s one thing I learned from this weekend, it’s you have to be fair to both sides.”
Meyers argued that it was important to point out when people are “objectively terrible,” to which Ruffin replied, “I thought that, too — on Friday. But today is Monday, and Monday’s Amber Ruffin knows that when bad people do bad things, you have to treat them fairly and respectfully.”
Ruffin continued to joke about the purpose of a free press, saying, “We have a free press so that we can be nice to Republicans at fancy dinners.”
She further mocked the decision to cancel her WHCD appearance: “I thought when people take away your rights, erase your history and deport your friends, you’re supposed to call it out, but I was wrong. Glad to find that out now because if they had let me give that speech, oh baby, I would have been so terrifically mean!”
