Abiotic Factor Canaan Walkthrough
Before heading into Canaan, keep in mind that it is one of the rare Portal Worlds in Abiotic Factor that does not have an emergency escape portal at the entrance.
Canaan can be thought of as a community with similar vibes to the Salem Witch Trials. The humans here are almost universally hostile to you and they’re surprisingly strong.
Look around for a lit torch. You’ll see a path on the ground on the right side of the torch.
Head down this path and you’ll come to a fork in the road. The right path leads to a dead end, so turn left.
You’ll soon approach another intersection with a cart and a torch next to it. The left path goes downhill and the right path leads to a gate with a guard in a tower.
The gate is locked. You could shoot and kill the guard, but you can’t get any loot from him from this position.
Head down the left path. You’ll see a log bridge over the water. Cross the log bridge and turn left. Eventually, you’ll come to another log leading up to a small hill.
Go up this log and you’ll be at another T Intersection. Get ready for a fight.
Take the path to the right and you’ll see three villagers, two of whom are armed with axes and one of whom is armed with a torch. Kill them. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a Woodsman’s Axe which can be broken down into useful crafting materials later. Villagers can also drop Silver Scrap.
You’ll also find a dead GATE scientist hanging from a tree. This area has a book called The Diary of Niketas – 3 and some Silver Scrap as well.
Turn around and cross the wooden log bridge at the other end of the intersection. On the other side of the water, turn left and head uphill.
You’ll encounter yet another fork. The left fork leads back to the river, so head right. You’ll see a windmill in the distance and you’ll hear some wood being chopped.
There are another 2 villagers in the immediate area. Kill them, then head uphill toward the windmill.
There is nothing of interest in the windmill itself aside from one villager. You can, however, find several Apple Trees outside of the Windmill which you can harvest for Apples.
A large barn is nearby which also has several villagers in it, but don’t head in just yet — there’s something else you’ll have to watch out for.
Nearby is a tall tower with a rope that looks like this:
This is a bell tower, and there are several of these spread throughout Canaan. If you attack a villager and they try to run away, they are heading toward the nearest bell tower. Should they ring it, a lot more villagers will spawn and attack you. It is essential that you kill them before the make it to the bell tower.
If you want, you can head into the barn and kill the villagers there. The nearby fields may have Pumpkins and Corrupted Corn. The Corrupted Corn can be used to make a Trinket, but it’s not strictly necessary to get it for now. Pumpkins, on the other hand, can be grown in a Garden Plot, so it’s useful to take those.
When you’re done looting this area, you’ll see a doorway and a wall on the far side of the field.
This is the town proper. There isn’t much of note in here aside from a few stray pieces of Silver Scrap and a bunch of villagers.
There is, however, one thing to look out for:
This is a Hexwood Tree. It is a living being that cannot move, but it can attack you. Kill it and you can get a couple pieces of Hexwood.
It’s easy to get lost in this village, so use this large central building on the upper hill next to a bell tower to keep track of where you are in town.
Go up the stairs, through this large central building, and out the other side.
When you’re back outside, you’ll see another bell tower by a bridge.
Head straight ahead until you pass the hanging sheets on the right.
Look down and to your right and you’ll see a small door.
Unlock this door and go through it. Next to it, you’ll see large gates. Unlock those gates for future visits.
Head down the path on the other side of the gate and you’ll find the gates near the starting area. Kill the guard in the tower and open these gates so you can get back to the town faster if you die or need to leave.
Head back the way you came and look across town; you’ll see another gate you can unlock to give yourself more routes to move around town.
Look toward the ocean and you’ll see a small, isolated shack by the water.
Head toward it. You’ll find The Diary of Niketas – 2 inside of the building along with a GATE Security Crate and a GATE power generator. You can also find a creepy painting of a Pumpkin.
Talk to the man sitting in a rocking chair and fishing on the docks and you’ll discover that he’s a GATE employee.
Speak with the Fisherman repeatedly. After several conversations, he’ll give you the recipe for the Insulated Rod, an upgraded Fishing Rod that can be used to catch the electrified Gutfish Eel in Canaan.
Head back into town. Our next goal is the cave lit by a lamp in the distance.
Go into the mine. You’ll encounter a few villagers inside.
Climb up the ladder and head outside on the second level. There are a couple more villagers up here, but you’ll want to head across the wooden bridge and toward the tower on its far side.
Head down the ladder inside the tower. At the bottom, you’ll find a small camp with a few villagers in it. Kill them.
Next, look at the other side of the tower and you’ll see a cave with a torch and a minecart.
Head into this cave. On the other side of the cave, you’ll see a building with a waterwheel on it.
Climb up the barrels and jump onto the waterwheel to get up on the roof. You can then drop down on the other side of the building and unlock the door. Alternatively, you can swim around the back and climb up a ladder.
This building has a GATE power generator in it. This is not a terrible spot for a small base if you want to establish one.
Next, go up the ladder inside this building and you’ll see a bucket elevator. You can ride the buckets up to the top of the cliff.
At the top of the cliff, turn right and you’ll see a broken bridge. Jump over it and head into the thicket; you’ve now made it to the swamp, the final major area in Canaan. You’ll also encounter a new enemy called a Bogman.
Bogman can root you in place with vines. They’ll also charge at you and use a melee attack. Kill every single one you see; they each have a small chance to drop a Lodestone Fragment.
The start of the swamp has a doll hanging from a tree; interact with it to get the crafting recipe for the Corn Husk Doll, a Trinket that you can make with a Cloth Rope and some Corrupted Corn.
After entering the swamp, head straight along the wooden path and make the first left you can. You’ll see a small shack in the distance.
Head inside and you’ll meet Dr. Riggs; she’s been pretending to be a witch to scare the villagers away. You can grab a Witch’s Hat hanging on the wall and interact with the Cauldron to learn how to craft a Cauldron.
Speak with Dr. Riggs. While she’s talking, you can grab the three cans of Canned Peas on the floor if you need food or nap in the Military Cots if you need some rest. Dr. Riggs will tell you about a plan to escape from this Portal World.
A brown cube is resting on a pedestal at the back of the hut. Pick it up — this is the Lodestone.
There isn’t much else of interest in the swamp aside from some Bogmen and Hexed Trees. Go back the swamp’s entrance, then work your way back to the entrance of the mine with the hanging lamp. In the distance, you’ll see your next goal: the church.
Walk toward the church.
As you get closer, you’ll see a building with two chimneys on your left.
The building on the left is the blacksmith. You’ll find an anvil inside which effectively serves as a Repair & Salvage Station; use it to dismantle the Lodestone into Lodestone Fragments. You can also smash any Pumpkins to get Pumpkin Seeds.
Head up to the church. Inside you’ll find Niketas and several followers.
Niketas is protected by a personal shield and he throws explosives that can penetrate through your armor. Kill all of his followers first.
When Niketas’ followers are dead, you can focus on him. It’s best to keep your range and hit him with ranged weapons if possible. If melee is your only option, it’s best to hit him two or three times and back away so you can dodge his grenades.
With Niketas dead, you can take the ladders up to the top of the church. Use a Lodestone Fragment to repair the portal device. The exit portal will open and you can leave Canaan. Click here to continue from where you left off in the Security Sector Walkthrough!
