At least 3 killed in train crash in Germany

At least three people were killed and others seriously injured on Sunday when a passenger train derailed in southern Germany, authorities said.

Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near the town of Riedlingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg state, just after 6 pm German time, remained under investigation.

It was not immediately clear how many people had been injured. Roughly 100 people were on board the train at the time of the crash, authorities said.

A police spokesperson in the city of Stuttgart said at least two carriages had left the tracks. The train was travelling from the town of Sigmaringen to Ulm when it came off the rails in a forested area.

Footage from the crash scene showed yellow and grey train carriages lying on their sides, as firefighters and emergency services worked to rescue the passengers.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was in close contact with the interior minister and transport minister, the London Telegraph reported.

He said: “The train accident in the district of Biberach upsets me. We mourn for the victims. I express my sympathy to their relatives.”
