Tasmanian man, 29, jailed for more than eight years over child abuse and bestiality material

A Tasmanian man has been jailed for more than eight years over online child abuse material offences.
The 29-year-old was arrested in March 2021 after US authorities tipped off Australian police about someone uploading child abuse material to a photo-sharing website.
During a search of the man’s home in New Norfolk, in southeast Tasmania, on March 16, 2021, police found child abuse and bestiality material on multiple electronic devices.

Investigators also found chat logs in which the man had encouraged another person overseas to sexually abuse a child.
He appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to multiple charges including possessing and accessing child abuse material, and encouraging the exploitation of a child overseas.
He was sentenced to eight years and three months’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of four years.
After his release, he will be listed on the Community Protection Register for 15 years.
AFP Detective Leading Senior Constable Dannii Campbell said anyone who viewed images or videos of children or animals being sexually abused was committing a crime.
“Children are not commodities to be used for the abhorrent gratification of sexual predators, and the demand for videos and images depicting abuse contributes to the physical harm and torture of innocent children,” Campbell said.
Members of the public with information about child abuse are urged to contact the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation.
