Trump Extends TikTok Divestiture Deadline to September

*President Donald Trump has granted China’s ByteDance an additional 90 days, until September 17, to divest TikTok, marking his third extension of the deadline, the White House announced on June 19, 2025.
This follows a brief U.S. app store ban on January 19, which prompted Trump’s initial extension on January 20 and a second in April. The executive order instructs the Justice Department to pause enforcement actions during this period, ensuring TikTok remains accessible to its 170 million American users.
As Deadline reports, TikTok expressed gratitude, stating, “We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users and 7.5 million U.S. businesses that rely on the platform as we continue to work with Vice President Vance’s Office.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized Trump’s commitment, saying, “President Trump will sign an additional Executive Order this week to keep TikTok up and running.” She added, “This extension will last 90 days, which the Administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.”
The extensions stem from a 2024 law requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok or face a U.S. ban, which the Supreme Court upheld. Trump, who previously sought divestiture during his first term, has praised TikTok’s role in engaging young voters.

Amid strained U.S.-China relations due to Trump’s tariffs, investors like Frank McCourt Jr. are exploring a purchase. McCourt, in an Entrepreneur interview, proposed migrating users to an open-source platform, stating,
“We’re advocating for a new, better, advanced Internet where individuals own and control their identity and their data.”
With no legal challenges to the extensions, TikTok’s future in the U.S. hinges on these negotiations.
