*Paramount Pictures has debuted the official trailer for its “Naked Gun” reboot, igniting excitement for the return of the iconic comedy franchise, slated for release on August 1.
Liam Neeson stars as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., inheriting the bumbling detective mantle from his father, originally played by Leslie Nielsen in the beloved trilogy and “Police Squad!” TV series. Directed by Saturday Night Live alumnus Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane, the film promises a fresh dose of the absurd humor that defined the originals.
Joining Neeson is a vibrant cast, including Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, Liza Koshy, Cody Runnels, and CCH Pounder. The trailer highlights the Police Squad’s latest world-saving mission, blending slapstick gags with modern flair. A previously released teaser included a scene where officers honor their late fathers before framed portraits, with one officer, the son of Nordberg (played by O.J. Simpson in the originals), delivering a sly side-eye and head shake, sparking online chatter.
Fans have taken to social media to share their reactions. “That O.J. Simpson joke got me,” one viewer posted. Another said, “The reveal that the station has a dedicated dad memorial room is much funnier than the OJ bit.” A third commented, “Was on the fence about this, but OJ’s kid looking at the camera and shaking his head was pretty funny.”
Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson’s former attorney, told TMZ, “It’s good OJ is acknowledged since he was a star of the franchise,” and described the nod as “funny.”
The reboot draws from the legacy of the “Naked Gun” films. The franchise first hit theaters in 1988 with “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” starring George Kennedy and Priscilla Presley, and spawned two sequels.
