2K Sports Has Reportedly Contacted Universities About College Hoops 2K Revival – Rumour

While 2K Sports has a few core yearly sports games—notably the NBA 2K and WWE 2K franchises—it looks like the company is looking to expand its offerings by dipping back into college sports. According to a report by Sports Business Journal, the company has seemingly been in contact with the sports programs at various schools and universities, namely Michigan St., Houston and UCLA, about a potential revival of the College Hoops 2K franchise.
According to the report, 2K Sports is hoping to feature more than 100 different teams from across sports programs in various American schools and universities. This figure is also expected to include women’s teams alongside the men’s teams. These teams would all receive “fair market value” for their presence in the game.
The company was previously expected to fold in its college sports basketball game as a separate DLC for the MyTeam mode in an NBA 2K game. The report also indicates that 2K Sports might produce a standalone basketball game based on college athletes if the game mode manages to capture enough of an audience by itself. According to a document obtained by sports reporter Matt Brown earlier this month, “2K would assess the viability of a standalone college basketball game that would be contingent on some measurable milestones for 2K28”.
These milestones include DLC sales, as well as sales projections that would indicate that 50 percent of the NBA 2K audience would be interested in buying a College Hoops 2K revival. For context, the last game in the College Hoops 2K franchise was College Hoops 2K8.
2K Sports unveiled its next mainline sports title—NBA 2K26—earlier this month. The title was announced with a trailer featuring narration by legendary director Spike Lee, and is slated for release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2 on September 5. The game will also be available in the form of the Leave No Doubt Edition, which comes with some in-game goodies alongside early access to the game on August 29.
For online multiplayer, NBA 2K26 will feature cross-platform multiplayer between the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. While the game is coming to a wide range of consoles, what features the previous generation of consoles will be missing is currently unknown. 2K Sports has also not yet confirmed whether the Switch 2 version will also have the same features as the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.
More details about its various game modes, including MyTeam, MyCareer and The W are expected to be revealed as we get closer to the release date.
In the meantime, the sudden interest that 2K seemingly has in college sports likely comes courtesy of EA having brought back its own college sports franchise in the form of EA Sports College Football. The latest of these—EA Sports College Football 26—was released earlier this month on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For more details, check out our review.
