Chris Pratt tributes late ‘Parks and Rec’ costar Jonathan Joss

Chris Pratt is mourning the loss of a former Parks and Recreation costar.

Following the news that actor Jonathan Joss was shot and killed at 59 in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday, the Electric State actor paid tribute in an Instagram Stories message, sharing a photo of Joss’ obituary, featuring a photo of him as Chief Ken Hotate on the NBC sitcom.

“RIP Jonathan. Always such a kind dude,” Pratt began the Monday night post. He went on to point out that, in addition to Parks and Rec, he shared the screen with Joss in 2016’s The Magnificent Seven. “Sad to see. Prayers up. Hug your loved ones.”

Ahead of Pratt’s tribute, fellow Parks and Rec star Nick Offerman told PEOPLE that Joss’ former costars were in touch and processing his loss together.

“The cast has been texting together about it all day and we’re just heartbroken,” he shared. “Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.”

Starring alongside Pratt, Offerman, Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aubrey Plaza and Adam Scott, Ross appeared in several episodes as Ken, the leader of the fictional Native American Wamapoke Tribe.

Joss, also known for voicing John Redcorn on King of the Hill, was killed in a June 1 shooting, according to the San Antonio Police Department. That evening, officers were dispatched to a shooting in progress in a residential area of San Antonio around 7 p.m, police told Entertainment Weekly. Joss was found near the road with gunshot wounds. Police began administering life-saving aid until emergency services arrived and later pronounced the actor dead at the scene.

Suspect Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja has since been taken into custody and charged with murder, authorities said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Joss’ death comes five months after his childhood home was destroyed in a fire that also killed three of his dogs. In a Facebook post on Monday, Joss’ husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales wrote that the couple were visiting the site of their former home to check their mail when Joss was killed in an act of violence that he characterized as homophobic.

Gonzales claimed that the suspect, a neighbor of theirs, belonged to a group of people who regularly “harassed” the couple because “they did not accept our relationship.” He wrote that he and Joss arrived at their property only to discover the “skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view.”

Gonzales alleged that while they were expressing their grief, a man approached them and began “yelling violent homophobic slurs” before raising a gun and shooting at the couple.

“Jonathan and I had no weapons,” he wrote. “We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life.”

Gonzales also noted that he and Joss had recently gotten married on Valentine’s Day and “were in the process of looking for a trailer and planning our future” together.
